Join us for a celebration of Chinese culture and achievement, including special exhibitions and programs for all ages throughout the month of July. All programs will be held at the Main Library. For complete details, click on an event.

This series is sponsored by Chinese Culture Connection, the Episcopal Quincy Chinese Center, and the Friends of the Thomas Crane Public Library.

EXHIBITS
July 1-31
Chinese Folk Arts
Museum-quality vintage folk arts from the Ella V. Bowering Collection, including clay figures, China dolls, puppets, children’s tiger hats and shoes and more.

Chinese Calligraphy & Painting
A collection of contemporary calligraphy and painting from the East Asian Art Gallery, created by Chinese artists Chen Peibin, Yao Sun, Xie Tiancheng and Lu Sen.

PROGRAMS

Opening Reception and Concert
Wednesday, July 9
Reception at 6:00 p.m., concert at 7:00 p.m.
Explore the exhibitions of Chinese folk arts, calligraphy and painting during an opening reception, and then enjoy a concert of traditional Chinese music, performed by Shin-Yi Yang and Zhen Ruo Mao (Kevin Zhen).

Rice Dough Workshop
Saturday, July 19 at 10:30 a.m.
Registration required, for ages 7+
Discover this ancient folk art and learn to make dough figures with a trained artisan.

Chinese in Boston, 1870-1965
Thursday, July 24 at 7:00 p.m.
Professor Wing-kai To presents images from his recently published book, the first comprehensive photographic history of Chinese Americans in Boston.

China: Rapid Changes in an Ancient Land
Monday, July 28 at 7:00 p.m.
In this photographic lecture, travel by road and river across China’s vast landscape from the modern cities of Beijing and Shanghai in the east to the rural towns and farms of the center and west of the country. Based on lecturer Barry Pell’s travels and residence in China during 2001 and 2004, the presentation will give an overview of China’s history and achievements, its people and culture and modern day problems, as it strives to transition to the status of a fully developed nation.
