I am not afraid to walk into a building and not be able to read the instructions to where I am going. Or driving my car and being able to read a highway sign so I know where I’m going. Or being able to read my own mail and writing my own check, instead of someone else doing it for me. These may seem like small things, but when you can’t do it, sometimes it’s a nightmare.

The literacy program has changed so many things for me. It has given me confidence to go after what is important to me no matter how old you are or how long it takes.
– Christine M.
This program has been very positive. Now, I can help my children with their homework. I am not nervous filling out forms or reading out loud. I enjoy reading the newspaper every day. The only regret I have is that I didn’t start this program sooner.

I never imagined in my whole life that I would ever be able to read. I want to say thank you to the program and especially to my teacher.

The more I learn to read, the more I know how important it is. Knowing how to read gives me confidence to keep learning.

Learning can never end. I thank God for the people who have patience to teach for they open the mind to learn and when you learn something new it brings out the best in you.

Learning to read made me a better person today. I don’t have to hide anymore.

I first decided I needed to learn how to read when my ex-wife was no longer there to read for me. I always thought I was too old to learn but the mail went unopened and the bills went unpaid. So then it became a matter of survival.

As a teacher I must pay tribute to my most recent student, Christine, whom I have taught and learned from for the past two years. No student in my 32 years of teaching was a more willing or eager student. The GED is an awesome challenge to someone with Christine’s educational background … but I have never been more certain of her eventual success because of her determination and passion for learning.

As I approach the end of my second year as a tutor in the LVM-Quincy program, I continue to be inspired by my student’s tenacious desire to improve his reading.

… I want to thank my student. You alone made my hope to make a difference come true. You wanted to learn. I wanted to teach. We made a good pair. You gave me a reason each week to come to the library in the good and bad weather, for 3 years!!! You made me look good with your desire to continue each week. You challenged me to keep it fresh and positive. Thank you.

Tutoring has become one of the most pleasurable things I do each week. It ranks right up there with taking an uninterrupted shower. (Not an easy task with a toddler!) I look forward each week to seeing my student and to listening to her tell me that she’s used her new skills to read a memo at work or a story to her grandson. Fulfilling? You have no idea.
